The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam Project is currently under construction on the Abay River in the Benishangul Gumuz Regional State about 750 km from Addis Ababa. It is the largest hydropower project in Africa and among the ten largest in the world. The project includes two powerhouses with a total installed capacity of 6,000 MW and 15,759 GWh of annual energy generation. It presents technical and managerial challenges and complexity also due to its exceptional size.
